In that time Cameron and Craig talked about the origins of his most famous creation, The Terminator, his hopes for Avatar and the technology behind it, the death of Stan Winston and what the future may hold.

The Magician with a Movie Camera: A Tribute to Nicolas Roeg

The Magician with a Movie Camera: A Tribute to Nicolas Roeg

Visionary director Nicolas Roeg has created some classics of modern cinema as well as inspiring several generations of world-class filmmakers by virtue of his poetic eye and iconoclastic approach to storytelling. Danny Boyle considers Roeg to be as important as David Lean in the history of British cinema, and it's impossible to keep track of the number of contemporary filmmakers who cite Don't Look Now as among their key influences. With Performance, Bad Timing, The Man Who Fell To Earth and Walkabout, Roeg cemented his place in the modernist canon - but his influence owes as much to his uncompromising approach as to the detail of his personal creative vision. Join us for this evening where some extraordinarily special filmmakers pay tribute to a cinematic hero.

Quantum of Solace + Director Marc Forster in Conversation

Marc Forster joins the BFI for a very special high-definition screening of 007's last outing.

Daniel Craig reprises his role as the world's favourite secret agent in this high octane action adventure of treachery, murder and deceit. Picking up the storyline shortly after the end of Casino Royale, this is the first direct sequel in the longest running film franchise in history. Betrayed by Vesper, the woman he loves, 007 fights the urge to make his latest mission personal. Pursuing his determination to uncover the truth, Bond and M (Judi Dench) interrogate Mr White (Jesper Christensen) who reveals the organisation that blackmailed Vesper is far more complex and dangerous than anyone had imagined... In a mission that leads him to Austria, Italy and South America, Bond allies with old friends, but with the British Government and the CIA working against him, he must kill or be killed to uncover the truth.

Early booking recommended for this evening that will no doubt whet the appetites of Bond fans everywhere for the forthcoming Cubby Broccoli season that will run throughout April and May and will include screenings of all 22 Bond films.

The Counterfeiters & Q&A with Adolf Burger as well as launching of his memoirs

The Counterfeiters & Q&A with Adolf Burger as well as launching of his memoirs.

Following a screening of The Counterfeiters, the Phoenix is delighted to welcome Adolf Burger for the English launch of his memoir, 'The Devil's Workshop' as well as a Q&A session. Burger's memoirs served as the basis for the film and are being published in English for the first time by Frontline Books.
The Counterfeiters follows the World War II story of Salomon Sorowitsch (Karl Markovics), a renowned local forger who is arrested by German police and imprisoned. In a bid for protection and favour with the guards, Salomon turns his hand to portraiture which gradually attracts attention and before long he is selected to join a team of counterfeiters embarking on the greatest forgery plot ever known. He is moved to Sachsenhausen concentration camp and kept in comparative comfort, with a number of other artistic and printing professionals who are forced to forge American and British currency to support the Nazi war machine.

Initially self-preservation in Salomon prevails but slowly his increasing awareness of the role he is playing in the holocaust unfolding on the other side of the fence, and his growing concern for his fellow prisoners causes him to struggle between the moral implications, the pride in his work and his own risk of extermination.

Preview screening of The Class

Preview screening of The Class

Riveting, Palme d'Or-winning look at a modern-day French classroom.

Based on François Bégaudeau's book Entre les murs, director Laurent Cantet's The Class is a riveting look at a modern-day French classroom as seen through the eyes of its teacher, François Marin (played by Bégaudeau himself). The film unfolds over the course of a school year, during which time we come to connect with Marin's students, who hail from varying economic and ethnic backgrounds.

The students are brilliantly portrayed by a talented cast of newcomers; naturalistic, charming and energised, their performances drive the film, and give it its heart. With the assistance of Bégaudeau and his cast, Cantet has created a rich, multilayered examination of French culture as told within the microcosm of the classroom, and he was the deserved recipient of the Palme d'Or at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.

Devil in the White City - Fan Made Trailer

Devil in the White City is a book by Erik Larson that tells the story of 2 men "Their fates were linked by the magical Chicago World’s Fair of 1893, nicknamed the “White City” for its majestic beauty. Architect Daniel Burnham built it; serial killer Dr. H. H. Holmes used it to lure victims to his World’s Fair Hotel, designed for murder. Both men left behind them a powerful legacy, one of brilliance and energy, the other of sorrow and darkness." This is an awesome tale weaving 2 stories together. The mast incredible thing about the story is that it is all true.

This story is ripe to be made into a film. I recently asked David Fincher if he had any intrest in adapting it his response was brief and to the point "I would need to see a screenplay". For more info visit here: http://www.randomhouse.com/crown/devilinthewhitecity/home.html

I hope to see this on the big screen soon.

A special preview screening of ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL and Q&A WITH ANVIL

PREPARE TO ROCK WHEN ANVIL COMES TO CURZON SOHO

Let down your hair and head bang your heart out when Anvil rock up at Curzon Soho. The (almost) legendary band will answer your questions after a special preview screening of the new documentary following their attempts at a comeback.ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL chronicles the journey of Toronto school friends Steve "Lips" Kudlow and Robb Reiner after they made a pact to rock together forever. Their band, Anvil, went on to become the "demigods of Canadian metal," releasing one of the heaviest albums in metal history, 1982's Metal on Metal. The album influenced a musical generation, including Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax, that went on to sell millions of records. But Anvil's career took a different path - straight to obscurity. Director Sacha Gervasi has concocted a wonderful and often hilarious account of Anvil's last-ditch quest for elusive fame and fortune. His ingenious filmmaking may first lead you to think this a mockumentary, but it isn't. Sundance Film Festival

"Possibly the greatest film yet made about rock and roll." The Times

Secret Cinema Febuary, London - A vote for Anvil is a vote for the spirit of Rock n Roll

Last weekend Secret Cinema pulled off their most awesome screening yet!:

- Dress for an 80s rock evening (Rock Gods, Shady Promoters, Metal Heads and Old School Rockers)
- Meet at the Sheperds Bush Empire
- An introduction by the legend that is Mr. Ralph Brown or Danny as he is known to his friends
- A screening of a short film about a Lebanese drummer
- An actual performance by up and coming rock band Cauldron
- A UK Premiere screening of ANVIL!

The following is a quote from www.metalhammer.co.uk which sums up the film pretty neatly:

"It’s not as if we metal fans aren’t used to being patronised and misunderstood by outsiders, but the strength of the Anvil movie lies in the fact that it’s a genuinely touching story about human beings, relationships and the pursuit of childhood dreams; all things that the vast majority of people can relate to without recourse to sneering superiority. In fact, the most startling thing about this screening of the film is that as it progresses, there’s a very noticeable change in atmosphere, as bemused giggling slowly evolves into bona fide sympathy and affection for Anvil and their rollercoaster ride."

The film moved me (a non hard metal fan) to purchase the latest ANVIL CD. I say "moved" as I have not bought a hard copy music in about 4 years. I knew of the ANVIL film and although impressed on hearing that ANVIL the band had been making live appearance to support the films launch had already decided that I would see it as a download or when it was on TV. I'm really glad I got to see the film big screen at Secret Cinema. I should mention that I had it the wrong way around - the film was created to promote the story of ANVIl. I only found out at that screening that the film was actually made by a dedicated ANVIL fan who had followed them since their early performances.

In many ways not only is it true to the spirit of rock but independent film making as well. So the film is over. It's time to pack up and leave. WRONG! Secret Cinema was just starting! After the credits the lights dim, a lone guitar riffs metal and a spotlight lights up a second tier balcony revealing "Lips" wailing on his axe.

- The screening was followed by a performance from ANVIL themselves and if that was not enough they pulled in Scott Ian (legendary Anthrax guitarist) to play a couple of songs. ANVIL pretty much got the audience on their feet and rocking out. It was a genuine rock gig by a genuine rock band.

Thanks Secret Cinema and thank you ANVIL for continuing to rock!

An online petition to get ANVIL to play Glastonbury can be found here > http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/sendanviltoglastonbury/

We the people have had enough of rich, bratty rock stars getting all the money and fame. We DEMAND to see ANVIL live on the Glastonbury stage in the summer of 2009. It's not just that they've earned it, it's that ANVIL ROCKS!'

After 35 years of putting in the work for NO REWARD, now is the time for ANVIL!!!

Opening Night Screening of Crossed Tracks Q&A with director Claude Lelouch

Opening Night Screening of Crossed Tracks Q&A with director Claude Lelouch

To open the exclusive two-week run of his new film at Ciné lumière, director Claude Lelouch will join audiences on 13 February for a special preview screening followed by a Q&A session.

'Roman de gare' translates as 'airport thriller' a term for the kind of enjoyable but disposable book one buys to while away the time on a long flight. Lelouch's film fits that description but is so beautifully done that it ends up as something much more impressive. In the opening sequence writer Judith Ralitzer (Fanny Ardant) is interrogated by the police about her missing ghost-writer; radio reports announce the escape from a prison of a serial killer known as 'The Magician'; a hairdresser is abandoned by her boyfriend at a roadside petrol station and picked up by a man who seems to know Judith; and a missing school teacher leaves his wife and children. But what is real... and what is fiction? Confused? Well, this is just the starting-point for 100 minutes of twists and turns, zigs and zags, red herrings and crossed tracks. Deceptively layered, extremely wry and intriguingly misleading, Crossed Tracks is a wonderful return to for the Oscar-winning who, in keeping with the spirit of the piece, shot the film under a ‘nom de plume’, only revealing himself as the director at its Cannes premiere.

Philip Glass: An Evening of Chamber Music

An intimate chamber concert with acclaimed composer/ pianist with new material never heard in the UK.

Philip Glass is one of the world's most popular living composers, acclaimed for his stunning soundtracks and ground-breaking operas, but in this concert, there's an intense focus on Glass himself, as a pianist and composer.

The Guardian wrote "Glass's restrained but haunting playing really is a joy", and the concert features part of his great solo piano cycles Metamorphosis and Etudes. He's joined by Wendy Sutter on cello and percussionist Mick Rossi to play music from Glassworks and Naqoyqatsi, the final film in the legendary Godfrey Reggio trilogy that began with Koyaanisqatsi.

Most of this programme has never been played in Britain before, and its centrepiece is Songs and Poems, a new work for Wendy Sutter.

Special screening of Who killed Nancy? + Q&A with director, Alan G Parker in London

Screen on the Green are pleased to host this special event, continuing the Sex Pistols' association with the Screen on the Green, which was the first venue at which the Sex Pistols played their first gig on 3rd April 1977. Screen on the Green will be hosting this very special film screening + Q&A with the director.

On October 12th 1978 Nancy Spungeon, an ex-prostitute, sometimes stripper and heroin addict, was found dead in a bathroom at the Chelsea Hotel in New York. She also happened to be the girlfriend of the Sex Pistols' bassist Sid Vicious, who was quickly accused of her murder. Less than 6 months later, he died of a heroin overdose and the case was closed.

The death of Sid and Nancy has passed into rock legend and has only added to the controversial and notorious image of the Sex Pistols and punk music.

At the request of Sid's mother, who committed suicide in 1996, rock author and punk expert Alan Parker has devoted himself to discovering WHO KILLED NANCY? By interviewing 182 people and re-examining NYPD evidence, he reveals what really happened that night in room 100.

The Black Rat Press annual print show, London

The Black Rat Press will be holding our first exhibition of 2009 later this month.

The annual print show dedicated to the art of printmaking opens on Saturday 21st February and will include new editions, one off trial proofs, our largest and most complex print to date, hand coloured prints, prints by artists new to the Black Rat Press and live printmaking demonstrations amongst other things we have not thought of yet. 2008 was a great year for publishing with prints published by Black Rat finding their way into both the Tate and V and A collections and we are currently working on projects which we hope will make 2009 prove even better.

Artists involved in the show include Matt Small, D*face, Sweettoof, Brian Adam Douglas, Gaia, Lucas Price, Nick Walker, Blek Le Rat and Slinkachu. Last years show was one of our favourite events of the year (apart from Matt Small being hospitalized) and its a great opportunity to see printmaking in action as well as to ask the printers any questions you might have.

Invitations to the show will be sent out via email in the next few weeks.
