Don Logan for Live Aid

Awesome I had heard about these promo videos that Ben Kingsley had done for Live Aid. I searched high & low for them for well over 18 months and eventually gave up writing them off to some sort of urban myth or marketing hype. Lo & behold if the possible visit from a friend sparks off a quick look for Don Logan media Hey Presto! Not 1 but all 3 of them.

For those of you who are not aware of who Don Logan is. Firstly shame on you - you are missing out on a modern classic rush out and get a copy of Sexy Beast as quick as possible.

Sexy Beast is a 2000 British film directed by Jonathan Glazer, starring Ray Winstone, Ben Kingsley and Ian McShane. It was Glazer's debut feature film. He had previously been a director of music videos, such as Rabbit in Your Headlights for British electronica group UNKLE, and commercials for companies such as Guinness and Levi.

It is a classic piece of modern gangster noir by way of MTV. An engaging story, colourful characters, music and vision working as one and there is Don Logan. Don is possibly the most menacing character since Sonny Corleone. Ben kingsley received countless nominations and awards for the role.

Fron Wiki:
Ben Kingsley as Don Logan. Don is a foul-mouthed, psychopathic and violent man who is part of the London underworld. He is a recruiter who puts crack teams together to do various jobs. A very determined man who will go to any length to make things go his way, Don uses anything and everything in his power to convince Gal to return to London to do a final job. Ben Kingsley, on the DVD commentry, calls Don "The Unhappiest Man in the World" and in several interviews, Kingsley has claimed that he based the character of Don Logan largely on his grandmother, whom he called, " A vile and extremely unpleasant woman."

Grace Jones does London

Grace Jones The Hurricane Tour. London 27 - 28 January 2009 at The Roundhouse

She is one of the most recognisable figures from the last twenty years - as a music artist, model and actress - boasting film credits that include James Bond’s A View To A Kill, an impressive modelling career as well as being Andy Warhol's muse and making excellent music including I’ve Seen That Face Before and Pull Up To My Bumper.

Enigmatic Grace, who this month releases her first studio album in nearly twenty years, has been enjoying a stunning return. Hurricane, the new LP co-produced by Grace herself along with Ivor Guest, has seen Ms Jones collaborate with old friends Sly and Robbie as well as the likes of Brian Eno. This year she was crowned Q Awards Idol winner and seems to have re-entered the public consciousness that began with a sensational show at this year’s Meltdown Festival which is now widely regarded as one of the live music moments of this year.

The show will see Grace perform tracks from Hurricane, which has firmly positioned Ms Jones back on the music-scape. With jaw dropping and spine tingling hooks and rhythms, Hurricane projects Grace at her most enigmatic.

Terry Gilliam has an idea!

The British Film Institute screened "Time Bandits" and hosted a Q & A with Terry Gilliam. Before the event I was fortunate to meet Mr. Terry Gilliam and had the opportunity to ask him a couple of questions about his career, films in development and the future.

Critical Mass Waterloo Bridge, London

Critical Mass is an event typically held on the last Friday of every month in cities around the world where bicyclists take to the streets en masse. While the ride was originally founded with the idea of drawing attention to how unfriendly the city was to bicyclists, the leaderless structure of Critical Mass makes it impossible to assign it any one specific goal.

We are not sure, opinions seem to differ. There are probably as many aims of CM as there are participants. Each individual comes there with his or her own idea of what it's about, and the sum of this makes up the Mass. We have no organisers and no planned routes.

Exploded Globe installation, Hoxton square, London

Last weekend saw the spectacular launch of the UK’s first Restaurant and Bar Awards dedicated exclusively to design. To celebrate the occasion, Dominic Harris of Cinimod Studio was commissioned to create an outdoor interactive lighting installation. Conceived as an exploded blank canvas, the huge "exploded globe of light" was suspended from the trees over London’s famed Hoxton Square and was interactively controlled by the guests.

The launch event was attended by some of the top influential designers and industry press, as well as many curious members of the public. The installation was well received, and provided a delightful and engaging addition to the square. The artwork acted as a beacon of good design — key to the underlying message of the Restaurant and Bar Design Awards.

The Globe was constructed with a structural aluminium core and ribs, to which panels of Foamalux were fixed. An array of individually addressable Martin Professional LED fixtures provided the full colour illumination to the globe, and created the unique dappled light projections across Hoxton Square. A bespoke software programme, coded by Cinimod Studio in VVVV, controlled the overall installation.

These cards were ’scanned’ at a freestanding plinth located in one corner of the square, from where their colours were uploaded to the main globe to form the overall animated lighting display.

David Adjaye's Sclera a tulipwood pavilion, Southbank, London

Wooden structure installed at Southbank as part of London Design Festival

Architect David Adjaye has created a pavilion made of American tulipwood that is on display at the Southbank centre as part of the London Design Festival. The pavillion's open design allows visitors to experience the effect of light inside the curved interior.

Adjaye selected American tulipwood for its flexibility, strength, attractive grain and varying colour hues of pale yellow through to mid brown.

The pavilion, named “Sclera”, was made in collaboration with the American Hardwood Export Council to demonstrate how this particular wood is suitable for a wide range of applications.
It was transported in four trucks from Germany and constructed on site by UK company Mtech, working with German fabricators Hess Wohnwerk. Wood preservation specialists Osmose have been technical advisors to the project.

“'Tis no sin to cheat the devil” - Daniel De-foe

Daniel Defoe (1659 — April 24, 1731)was an English writer, journalist, and pamphleteer, who gained enduring fame for his novel Robinson Crusoe. Defoe is notable for being one of the earliest practitioners of the novel, as he helped to popularise the form in Britain, and is even referred to by some as one of the founders of the English novel. A prolific and versatile writer, he wrote more than five hundred books, pamphlets, and journals on various topics (including politics, crime, religion, marriage, psychology and the supernatural). He was also a pioneer of economic journalism.

William Blake's grave, Bunhill Fields Cemetery, London

William Blake's grave, Bunhill Fields Cemetery, London.
If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is: Infinite.

William Blake was a poet, painter, visionary mystic, and engraver. During his life the prophetic message of his writings were understood by few and misunderstood by many. However Blake is now widely admired for his soulful originality and lofty imagination. The poetry of William Blake is far reaching in its scope and range of experience. The poems of William Blake can offer a profound symbolism and also a delightful childlike innocence. Whatever the inner meaning of Blake's poetry we can easily appreciate the beautiful language and lyrical quality of his poetic vision.

Bunhill Fields Cemetery, London

Bunhill Fields is a peaceful oasis in the center of the London used by locals and tourists alike to relax and take a break from the bustling city.

It is also a site of great historical and religious significance: Bunhill Fields is unconsecrated ground that has been used for centuries as a burial place for Nonconformists, Dissenters, and other people who died outside of the Church of England.

This old burial ground, shaded by mature plane trees, is situated on the edge of the City. Bunhill Fields was first set aside as a cemetery during the Great Plague of 1665.

It was enclosed by a brick wall and gates but does not seem to have been used at that time. The ground was never apparently consecrated and twenty years later it became a popular burial ground for Nonconformists, who were banned from being buried in churchyards because of their refusal to use the Church of England prayer book.

At the time it was erected it was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world, until it was surpassed by the Star of Nanchang (160m) in May 2006, and then the Singapore Flyer (165m) on February 11, 2008. However, it is still described by its operators as "the world's tallest cantilevered observation wheel" (because the entire structure is supported by an A-frame on one side only).[3]

London Fashion Week aficionados

A fashion week is a fashion industry event, lasting approximately one week, which allows fashion designers or "houses" to display their latest collections in runway shows, and buyers to take a look at latest trends. And most importantly let the industry know, what's "in" and what's "out" for the season. The most prominent fashion weeks are held in the fashion capitals like Milan, Paris, London, and New York City.In the early and mid 2000s, fashion weeks sprang up around the globe to draw attention to designers elsewhere.

Was on the tube when I noticed these 2 guys decked out in trendy gear they were both carrying portfolio cases with official London Fashion Week seals on them. They looked nervous enough to be showing some of their kit. Something very cool about kids getting a break.

Shell Mex House, 80 Strand, London

Shell-Mex House 80 Strand
Shell Mex House is at 80, Strand, London, UK. Broadly speaking in an Art Deco style, it was designed by Ernest Joseph, a Jewish architect who was a leading designer of synagogues, including the Art Deco-style synagogue at Sheepcote Street, Birmingham, and the classical-style synagogue in St. John's Wood Road, London (of which only the facade remains).

The current building was completed in 1930–31 on the site of the Cecil Hotel (so called because it was built on the site of Cecil House), and stands between the Adelphi Terrace and the Savoy Hotel.

Standing 58 m (190 ft) tall, with 537,000 sq ft (49,900 m2) of floor space, Shell Mex House has 12 floors (plus basement and sub-basement) and is immediately recognizable from the River Thames and the South Bank by the clock tower positioned on the south side of the building (flanked by two large, hieratic figures at the south corners). In the words of architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner, the building "is thoroughly unsubtle, but succeeds in holding its own in London's river front."

Damon Albarn's Monkey: Journey To the West Monkey's World

Damon Albarn's Monkey: Journey To the West Monkey's World - Through Nov & Dec 2008

After a phenomenally successful run, wowing audiences around the world to exceptional acclaim– Monkey finds a new home in London.

First performed in the UK at the inaugural Manchester International Festival in 2007, following sold-out runs, Monkey: Journey to the West is a new opera for the 21st century, directed by the world renowned Chen Shi-Zheng, with music composed by Gorillaz award-winning mastermind Damon Albarn, and design and animation by Jamie Hewlett based on the ancient Chinese legend of spiritual enlightenment.

This reworked version is a dazzling spectacle involving nearly 40 circus acrobats, martial artists and singers from China with an orchestra of Western and traditional Chinese instruments.

Monkey, headstrong, self-important hero of the story, is hatched from a stone egg on the Mountain of Flower and Fruit. After crossing the all-powerful Buddha, Monkey is given the opportunity to redeem himself by travelling to India with the young monk Tripitaka to bring the Holy Scriptures back to China.

Damon Albarn's score deftly weaves Chinese and Western influences to provide a sparkling setting for the story as it moves between heaven and earth. Adaptor and director Chen Shi-Zheng, musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett have created this spectacular opera which is coming to the Royal Opera House this July.

Monkey: Journey to the West is a stage adaptation of the 16th Century Chinese novel Journey to the West, by Wu Cheng'en. It was conceived and created by the Chinese actor and director Chen Shi-zheng, together with the British musician Damon Albarn and British artist Jamie Hewlett. However, the original idea came from Jean-Luc Choplin, head of the Chatelet Theatre in Paris

European premier of Righteous Kill

European premier of Righteous Kill

You are invited to rub shoulders with screen giants Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. Both will be attending the premier of cop thriller Righteous Kill in central London next Sunday

The film sees the two Hollywood greats reunited on screen for the first time since their 1995 thriller Heat. After thirty years as partners in the pressure cooker environment of the New York Police Department, highly decorated detectives Turk (De Niro) and Rooster (Pacino) aren’t ready to retire.

There have been a series of murders of suspected criminals popping up around the city. The police know it’s a serial killer because personalized poems are discovered on each body, an obvious clue to the motive.

How can they stop this killer from enacting his or her own brand of justice.
