Jack Says wins BEST FEATURE FILM at the Newport International Film Festival

The film I helped produce won BEST FEATURE FILM at the Newport International Film Festival.

BEST FEATURE FILM: JACK SAY'S – Directed by Bob Phillips (UK)

Jack Says is a 2008 British independent feature film known particularly for being the last professional engagement of the legendary Mike Reid, who died shortly after filming in 2007.

The film is a contemporary film noir, with comic book undertones that reflect it's precursor graphic novel Jack Said, and is comparable in style to Sin City. The film also stars Simon Phillips, Rita Ramnani, Daniel Roberts, Rula Lenska and Eric Cantona.

Waking up in London with amnesia next to a dead body, Jack has just enough time and sense to disappear before the police arrive. In an attempt to lay low, he heads to Paris to visit the ex he can’t remember. But a guy like Jack attracts trouble, and an encounter with the mysterious Girl X draws him and the woman he loves back into a world he’s trying hard to avoid … and to remember.

Awesome Sweded Tron clip

Sweded
The summarized recreation of popular pop-culture films using limited budgets and a camcorder. The process is called sweding. Upon completion the film has been Sweded.

Origins: In the Michel Gondry film BE KIND REWIND, the character Jerry accidentally erases the videotapes at Mos Def's rental store, and the pair remake all the movies themselves. These versions become popular with customers, who are told they take longer to arrive and cost more because they come from Sweden. Hence, the films are referred to as 'Sweded'.

TRON 2.0 is coming soon (2011)

Disney debuts the teaser trailer for TR2N at Comic-Con 08.

As always the trailer was captured by a fan on his mobile phone. The below version was further cleaned up by another fan to give us an almost watchable version.

From "http://tron2trailer.blogspot.com/" comes a breakdown of the full teaser trailer:

- The Disney logo appears and quickly seems to get digitized.

- We pan over ominous clouds into a digital city landscape only to find a man in a updated “Tron” costume. He’s on the run.

- The man jumps into a brand new 2008 version of the familiar light cycle.

- And a huge chase ensues with a pursuer in a dark mask after our racer. Unlike cycle races of old this one goes up and down AND side to side.

- The chased man is vanquished, crashing horrible. As the pursuer gets off his cycle he pulls a familiar disc from his back. The winner looks up to a previously unseen observer.

- And the observer is…Jeff Bridges! An older (and now evil) Flynn?!? He rises from a meditative state in his watchtower to see the pursuer do his bidding.

- The vanquished man pleads to his pursuer. “It’s just a game!” And then the final big reveal: the pursuer takes off his helmet and he is also Bridges, a seemingly younger Bridges!

Yes! It seems that both Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleiter are reprising their roles from the original.

Double Bill: Preview screening of Sukiyaki Western Django & Django at Curzon Soho

The Curzon Soho is offering a double helping of Western madness.

First off, an exclusive preview of Takashi Miike’s (Audition, Visitor Q) Sukiyaki Western Django, followed by the cult classic that inspired it: Sergio Corbucci’s Django.

Proceedings will kick off with a Cowboy party in the bar from 9.30pm, before the films begin at 11.30pm!

Sukiyaki Western Django
As two gangs battle for control of a remote town, a deadly gunman comes to the aid of the residents. Making his Japanese cast speak English and with a cameo from Quentin Tarantino, this is one of Miike’s most bizarre films yet.

Please note this screening will not be subtitled!

Django
Legendary cult film about a coffin-dragging gunslinger who enters a town caught between the KKK and a gang of Mexican Bandits. Inspiration for the ear-cutting scene in Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, Django is a full-on, over-the-top Western epic.

Special preview of Milk and Q&A with Gus Van Sant (Director) and Dustin Lance Black (Writer)

On Saturday 17 January, Curzon Cinemas presents a special preview of Gus Van Sant’s MILK, the biopic of Harvey Milk. They are pleased to confirm that director Gus Van Sant and writer Dustin Lance Black will be joining us for a Q&A after the film.

MILK [15]

In 1977, Harvey Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, thus becoming the first openly gay man to be voted into major public office in America. He went on to change the very nature of what it means to be a fighter for human rights before his untimely shooting in 1978 by a former city supervisor. Van Sant’s biopic charts the last eight years of Milk’s life – his decision to leave New York, his involvement with the famous Castro Cinema and his decision to become a spokesperson for change. Penn is on superlative form as Milk, giving a nuanced, understated performance that perfectly captures Milk’s humanity and humility.

STOP PRESS! Preview screening of The Wrestler and Q&A with MICKEY ROURKE in Soho, London - 5 January 2009

We are honoured to invite you to what is expected to be the hottest ticket of 2009!

A preview of the upcoming film from Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream) THE WRESTLER followed by a Q&A with its star, acting legend Mickey Rourke.

Winner of the Golden Lion Award for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival 2008, Mickey Rourke gives a performance of astonishing commitment and emotional impact in THE WRESTLER, all the more poignant considering Rourke also returned to his boxing roots for the role. Director Darren Aronofsky produces a pure and vivid character study of Randy “The Ram” Robinson (Rourke) who was at the top of his game until forced into early retirement. However, he finds himself back in the ring in a circuit of gruelling, un-televised fights. He also endures a painful relationship with estranged daughter Stephanie (Evan Rachel Wood) and a tentative romance with stripper Cassidy (Marisa Tomei).

Preview: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button + The Guardian Interview with David Fincher

We are thrilled to be able to present this preview screening of David Fincher's richly satisfying new film, and to be able to welcome him to BFI Southbank to take part in the Guardian Interview as part of our retrospective of his career to date.

From Fight Club to Panic Room, The Game to Zodiac, David Fincher's work is that of a master craftsman, combining technical know-how and story-telling ability in a way few directors can. These skills are demonstrated to the full in this wonderful adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Incredibly ambitious both technically, and in terms of its narrative structure, the film follows the eventful life of Benjamin Button (a beautifully restrained, touching performance from Brad Pitt), a man who is born in his eighties and ages backwards physically, while maturing emotionally and mentally. Working from a script by Eric Roth (Ali, The Insider), Fincher has created a truly remarkable, richly satisfying film.

One day a lone figure, Loki (Sean Bean), appears on the ice and collapses and Saiva nurses him back to health. Special screening of Frost/Nixon and Q&A with Peter Morgan, London

Special screening of Frost/Nixon and Q&A with Peter Morgan

Curzon Cinemas will be hosting an exclusive preview screening of FROST/NIXON followed by a Q&A with screenwriter and executive producer Peter Morgan.

After nearly twenty years writing television projects Peter Morgan emerged as the top talent in his field thanks to the success of The Deal (2004), which centred around the co-dependent relationship between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. This success continued in 2006 with two critically acclaimed films, The Queen and The Last King of Scotland. Morgan has consistently demonstrated a gift for portraying public figures as real human beings involved in interesting and complex relationships; something he continued in the award winning play, and new feature film, Frost/Nixon.

FROST/NIXON
Director: Ron Howard
Starring: Frank Langella, Michael Sheen, Rebecca Hall. US 2008. 121 mins

Reprising their roles from Peter Morgan’s stage play are Langella, who won a Tony for his portrayal of Nixon, and Michael Sheen, who fully inhabited the part of Frost onstage in London and New York. Screenwriter Morgan, who’s racked up an impressive number of on screen portrayals of highly public figures (The Queen, The Last King of Scotland), here revisits the electrifying battle between Richard Nixon, the disgraced president with a legacy at stake, and David Frost a jet-setting television personality with a name to make. In summer 1977, the steely former commander-in-chief agreed to an interview with Frost and as the cameras rolled, a charged battle of wits ensued.

Invitation to a special preview of - Dean Spanley

Hello,

A chance to see this film before it's release on 12th December 2008

Peter O'Toole stars as a misanthropic curmudgeon who unexpectedly re-lives joyous and painful memories thanks to the revels of a drunken curate.

Peter O'Toole gives a scorching performance as misanthropic curmudgeon, Horatio Fisk, in this wonderfully eccentric comedy-drama. Set just after the turn of the twentieth century and based on the novel by Baron Dunsany, it's full of peculiarly English quirks and ticks. To relieve the tedium of their regular outings, distanced father and son, Horatio and Henslowe (O'Toole and Jeremy Northam) attend a lecture on the Transmigration of Souls by a visiting Hindu Swami. There, they meet Dean Spanley (Sam Neill), with whom, after a series of chance encounters, Henslowe strikes up a bizarre friendship.

At dinner he plies the Dean with a rare Hungarian wine, the Imperial Tokay, secured from colonial rogue trader, Wrather (Bryan Brown). In return, Spanley hales forth trance-like reminiscences of a highly unexpected former life. A pre-existence that may just hold the key to the family heartbreak that Horatio is trying to keep repressed. Dean Spanley is a special film in that uses the wildest imaginings to reveal common emotional truths; warmly presenting them to us so that we can laugh, and perhaps cry, at ourselves.

Dean Spanley previews on Sunday morning at 11am.

Franz Ferdinand are to play a 'secret' gig in London next week

Franz Ferdinand are to play a 'secret' gig in London next week, according to reports.

Kid Rock live at the Hammersmith Apollo, London

I'm happy to tell you that you and and 1 friend are on the VIP guest list for the once off Live Nationshow Kid Rock show at London Hammersmith Apollo on Sunday 30th November 2008.

Enjoy!

Kid Rock has announced that he will be returning to the UK this November to perform a one off show at London's Hammersmith Apollo.

Kid Rock has sold over 25 million albums since the release of his debut album Grits Sandwiches For Breakfast in 1990 and he recently shot to number 1 in the charts with ‘All Summer Long'.

Being touted as Kid Rock's most honest, eclectic, and soulful record to date, it's his State of the Union address, a deeply personal statement that looks at racism in America, empathizes with soldiers in Iraq (Rock visited the troops last Christmas) and also lays bare his tormented relationship with Pam Anderson.

Whatever you want to call him - Rock & Roll Jesus, the Detroit Cowboy, American Badass, the Early Morning Stoned Pimp, or just plain Bobby, as he's known to his friends and family, Kid Rock always guarantees an exceptional show, making this one-off UK performance one not to be missed.

In the spirit of working-class rockers from the great state of Michigan --- Grand Funk Railroad, Bob Seger, Ted Nugent, Mitch Ryder --- Rock doesn't believe music should be complicated. His attitude is live and let live --- a refreshing if somewhat dumbfounding stance from a self-professed red-neck who has been known to wave guns around.

Trioka Digital Zoetrope installation for the Onedotzero Adventures inMotion festival at the BFI

Whilst at the BFI Southbank for a preview screening of Franklyn I discovered an interesting installation in the foyer. Turned out is was a digital Zoetrope.

From Wiki: A zoetrope is a device that produces an illusion of action from a rapid succession of static pictures.

After a bit of snooping I found out that "Onedotzero commissioned Trioka to create an entire "multi-sensory identity" for the Adventures in Motion festival, consisting of printed material, a digital trailer and an installation.

the festival showcases a tantalising mix of the brightest up-and-coming talents alongside world-leading creative luminaries; an international array of creators who stretch ideas of motion entertainment, where code clashes with hand crafted, street art tussles with technology and new modes of storytelling are unleashed from the small screen to the BFI IMAX. all underpinned by a theme of citystates, a creative inquiry into the idea of how we live in the modern metropolis.

They also took inspiration from the traditional technology of a Victorian zoetrope – a cylinder containing slits with a band of images on the inside; when you spin the cylinder the images blur together to give the illusion of a moving image. Troika have created a digital version of this, a cylindrical tower with an internal light; as the cylinder rotates and the light strobes, stories of people’s lives in different cities are alternately display

Britney's not secret London gig

Not really my thing but I am keen to see how many read a post about Britney Spears.

According to Marie Claire "Britney Spears will perform in a special one-off, private gig this weekend in London."

In the UK to appear on X Factor, the comeback queen will drop by the GAY club night, currently in residence at central London nightclub Heaven, for a highly anticipated performance.

Independant Massachusettian rockers Four Year Strong are playing a secret gig in London

Little know rockers Four Year Strong are doing a secret, invite-only acoustic gig in London on Monday at 1pm.

Four Year Strong is a five-piece American Pop Punk / Hardcore punk band from Worcester, Massachusetts. 3/5 of the band were in the original lineup that dates back to 2001. Dan, Alan and Jake all attended Doherty Memorial High School in Worcester and met through mutual friends. After the departure of the original bassist some 2 or 3 years after formation, they met Joe and asked him to fill the gap. Their early work never included any keyboards or synthesizers, but after a while they began to incorporate it into their music. The band cycled through many keyboardists, but recruited their current keyboardist Josh Lyford in late 2006. Over the past years, the band has done multiple national tours, sharing the stage with such bands as The Starting Line, Hellogoodbye, From First to Last, Every Time I Die, Hidden in Plain View, All Time Low,New Found Glory, Bayside and Steel Train. The band toured Australia in June 2008 with Rex Banner.

The band's sound can be described as a blend of Pop punk, Hardcore, and powerpop. The band simply developed their sound off the idea of playing 'exactly what they want to hear' or music that they would listen to, but no one else was playing at the time.[3] The band has cited their influences as being Lifetime, Saves the Day, Gorilla Biscuits, and New Found Glory to name a few. Though the band would primarily start out as a post-hardcore and emo outfit, the release of their demo in 2004 would mark a shift from post-hardcore to more synthesizer-heavy tracks, where the band would began to embrace the styles of powerpop and general punk rock. Prior to the release of Rise or Die Trying the band would also incorporate more facets of modern hardcore, such as double bass drums, breakdowns, and screaming vocals with the addition of synthesizers. Since a number of the band's songs are composed of hardcore breakdowns, soaring choruses, and upbeat tempos, many fans have mistakenly dubbed their musical style as 'Happy Hardcore,' though in reality this refers to a type of dance music popular in the mid-90's.
