Special Screening: The Damned United & Q&A with Director Tom Hooper

Director Tom Hooper will be at The Phoenix for the opening night of the film on Friday 3 April for a Q&A following the 6.30 screening.

Adapted for the screen by Peter Morgan (The Queen, The Last King of Scotland, Frost/Nixon) from best-selling and critically acclaimed novel by David Peace, the film tells the story of Brian Clough’s doomed 44 day tenure as manager of the reigning champions of English football, Leeds United. But aside from being a legendary sports story, the film is grounded by the story of intense friendship between Clough and his right hand man, Peter Taylor – a friendship that is tested by Clough’s compulsive rivalry with former Leeds manager Don Revie.

Tom grew up in East Finchley and has directed some of the best work on television in recent years including HBO’s John Adams, which won a record 13 Emmy’s, the BAFTA and Golden Globe-winning Longford, and Elizabeth I with Helen Mirren for which he won an Emmy for Best Director. This is his much-anticipated feature film debut.

Ticket sales from this event will benefit the Centenary Restoration Project. More information about the project is available here. Tickets are £10 / £8 concessions.

Sir Ridley Scott in Conversation

As part of the BFI's Blade Runner Day which includes special screenings and events relating to the BFI's 75th anniversary poll. The BFI welcome one of Britain's most celebrated directors to the BFI Southbank stage.

The Times film critic James Christopher's description of Blade Runner as 'magnificent cinema... a big and broody sci-fi thriller that is impossible to swallow in one gulp' - in response to the question 'Which film would you want to share with future generations and why?' - helped to win the film first place in the BFI's 75th anniversary poll. As the highlight of our day-long celebration of the film, we are thrilled to be able to welcome one of Britain's most celebrated directors - Sir Ridley Scott - to the BFI Southbank stage.

Director of films such as Thelma & Louise and Gladiator, his career famously began in advertising alongside other future film-makers such as Sir Alan Parker. This led to his debut feature film The Duellists (1977), which won him a Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, while he received universal acclaim two years later with Alien, another classic in the sci-fi genre. The BFI look forward to welcoming him to discuss the legacy of Blade Runner and his career so far.

I have seen some awful Watchmen merchandise but was sent a link to this pretty, pretty cool Watchmen Bloody Doomsday Clock.

"These decorative wall clocks feature the infamous Doomsday Clock that symbolized the Cold War in the world of Watchmen. The Bloody Doomsday Clock shows blood splatter, while the Wooden Doomsday Clock features a stylish retro design."

It's available for purchase here.

UK Blogger Screening of THE WATCHMEN

From http://watchmen-screening.pbwiki.com/

The good news? THIS IS HAPPENING. The bad news? IT'S HAPPENING IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS TIME.

It's going to take place at the Paramount International Screening Room in Building 5, Chiswick Park TOMORROW (that's TUESDAY 3RD MARCH) at 10.30am (nearest station is Gunnersbury Tube, on the District Line).

I realise that's less than ideal timing, not nearly enough notice, and a bit out of the way, but we've got 50 (extremely comfortable) seats to fill, so if you're on the list below (or coming to this cold, and interested in attending) please drop the contacts listed on the original blogger invite page ASAP.
Obviously we'll be treating anyone listed below as priority, after which any extra names we receive will be handled on a first-come-first-served basis.
We'll be starting promptly at 10.30am, so best to arrive in plenty of time to go through security, sign NDAs, etc.
(FYI there's a pretty decent bar-restuarant-type-thing on the ground floor of the building in question, which would be a perfectly good place to grab a drink and have a chat afterwards, circa 1pm.)
